The UK has just experienced its driest Spring since 1961, with rainfall levels well below seasonal averages. Dry, compacted ground struggles to absorb sudden downpours, causing rainwater to run off quickly into streets, drains and low-lying areas.
Dry spells significantly increase the risk of flash flooding when heavy rain eventually returns
With more frequent and extreme weather events on the rise, homeowners should consider thinking differently about their gardens and make choices that could help reduce flood risk in and around their homes.
Recent research from insurer Aviva, surveying over 2000 UK residents highlights a worrying trend. While many homeowners are making changes to their gardens for aesthetic or maintenance reasons, a significant number are unaware of the impact those changes can have on flood resilience.
When gardens lose porous surfaces and natural planting, water has fewer places to soak in – especially during hot, dry spells followed by sudden downpours. For insurers, this presents a heightened risk of surface water and flash flood claims, particularly in urban environments where impermeable surfaces are common or there is limited drainage.
Summer flooding on the rise
As we have seen in recent years, the summer months are not immune from flooding. In fact, July and August have accounted for nearly a quarter (24%) of all annual flood claims according to Aviva, with each month receiving 12% of the yearly total. December remains the highest month for flood claims at 17% but summer’s rising numbers show just how important it is to prepare outdoor spaces for all seasons.
Small changes can make a big difference
Here are some simple and effective ways you can make your garden more ‘climate resilient’:
- Choose the right plants for the right locations and avoid planting trees too close to buildings.
- Opt for gravel, mulch or block paving to allow water to drain naturally.
- Partial changes like adding a planting border or installing a drain can improve runoff. Even a small patch of natural planting can aid drainage and attract pollinators.
- Use water butts to reduce pressure on local drainage systems during heavy rainfall.
